Grok Bot vs. ChatGPT Work in one line

Grok Bot is xAI's team of always-on agents that each get their own cloud computer and sign into your apps like a human coworker. ChatGPT Work is OpenAI's execution mode that turns a brief into a reviewable deliverable across your connected tools.

Both want to move AI past chat and into finished work — but they bet on different mechanics. Grok Bot leans on persistence and computer use; ChatGPT Work leans on structured, deliverable-focused tasks inside OpenAI's ecosystem. Here's how they compare and which fits your team.

What is Grok Bot?

Grok Bot launched in early beta on August 11, and it reframes the agent as a persistent teammate rather than a prompt box. xAI describes Bots as AI teammates that do real work for you — they sign in to your tools, use them just like you do, and come back with finished work.

The defining technical choice sits under the hood. The biggest technical difference is that Grok Bot gains access to its own virtual computer and can interact with applications without requiring an API or MCP connection for every service. That matters because it could address a major limitation facing today's AI agents: many workplace tools were never designed for autonomous software to control them.

A few things stand out:

  • Persistence. Each Bot operates through its own computer environment, can continue working when the user's laptop is closed, and can return when it needs approval or has finished the assignment.
  • A team, not one agent. A chief of staff sits on top, with a specialist for each lane — inbox management, expenses, recruiting, bug fixes, or operations — so you get a small team that can work in parallel instead of being the middleman.
  • Bots that talk to each other. Agents can exchange messages directly in shared threads, and teams can add bots into human group chats on messaging apps to handle direct requests.

xAI dogfooded it first. Before opening access, SpaceXAI deployed Grok Bot within its own departments — employees used it for sales prospecting, marketing campaigns, updating CRM databases, processing emailed invoices, and reproducing software bugs.

Availability is narrow at launch. The beta is available on desktop and iOS for SuperGrok Heavy, Cursor Ultra, and Cursor Teams Premium subscribers, and enterprise users can join a waitlist. No performance benchmarks were published, and Grok Bot remains in beta, so its reliability across complicated workflows will need broader testing.

What is ChatGPT Work?

The mental model OpenAI pushes is a three-way split:

  • Chat for quick questions and short drafts.
  • Work for multi-step tasks with a deliverable at the end.
  • Codex for coding, diffs, and repository tasks.

Work behaves less like a conversational assistant and more like an execution layer: it gathers context, follows a structure, and produces a reviewable output. It can pull from connected tools like Google Drive, Slack, email, calendars, project trackers, and CRMs — which is where it becomes more than a writing assistant and starts to orchestrate a workflow across your stack.

1. Computer use vs. connectors

This is the real fork in the road. Grok Bot operates a virtual machine and navigates the actual UI — vendor portals, ad managers, and older ops tools that never got an API. ChatGPT Work goes through OpenAI's connectors, which is cleaner and more predictable but limited to the integrations OpenAI supports.

Rule of thumb: if your work lives in messy, un-API'd interfaces, computer use is compelling. If it lives in mainstream SaaS with good connectors, Work's approach is faster and less error-prone.

2. Persistence vs. task scope

Grok Bot is built to keep running. Its Bots can take control of a computer and carry out digital work on their own, even after the user steps away. ChatGPT Work is scoped to a deliverable: give it a brief, get an artifact, review it. One is a standing coworker; the other is a task engine.

3. A team of agents vs. one execution layer

Grok Bot's multi-agent framing — a chief of staff plus specialists that message each other — is closer to an org chart than a chatbot. ChatGPT Work keeps you as the orchestrator across separate tasks. If you want parallel work across lanes with less hand-holding, Grok Bot's model is more ambitious; if you want tight control over one deliverable at a time, Work is simpler.

Which should your team choose?

Choose Grok Bot if you already pay for SuperGrok Heavy or Cursor's top tiers, your work spans clunky interfaces without clean APIs, and you want always-on agents that keep moving while you're away. Just remember it's an early beta with no published benchmarks — pilot it on low-risk work first.

Choose ChatGPT Work if you live in the OpenAI ecosystem, your tools have solid connectors, and you mainly need messy inputs turned into polished, reviewable deliverables. It's the safer pick for stakeholder-facing output today.

Handing a cloud agent your logins and letting it operate your apps is powerful — and it's also the part to scrutinize.
