The AI office wars, in one line

Every major AI lab is now shipping a work agent — a standalone client that takes a one-sentence brief, breaks it into steps, operates your browser and desktop, and hands back a finished deck, spreadsheet, or report. On August 25, ByteDance added its entry: Doubao Work.

If you're trying to figure out what Doubao Work is, how it stacks up against ChatGPT Work, Claude Cowork, Tencent's WorkBuddy, and Alibaba's Qwen Office — and which one (if any) your team should adopt — this is the map. The short version: the products look nearly identical on stage, and the real differences hide in what work context each one can reach.

What is Doubao Work?

Doubao Work is ByteDance's standalone AI office product, spun out of the older "Work Task" mode inside Doubao and given its own desktop client. ByteDance launched it on Tuesday as an AI workplace agent that can break down assignments, use software tools, operate browsers, and control virtual desktops with permission.

Its capabilities cover the now-standard menu: writing documents, building spreadsheets and slide decks, generating images, video, web pages, and even small applications — then editing them after generation. For heavier jobs, it drives a browser and your local computer to search, fill forms, and call software, or hands the task to a cloud computer to run in the background.

Two details make it distinct:

  • Feishu (Lark) integration. The product connects to Feishu, ByteDance's answer to Slack, so it can pull chat records, documents, meeting minutes, and schedules within an authorized scope — and write new content back. That's a ready-made "work memory" most rivals lack.
  • A 30-day free trial. New users get 30 days free, with pricing not yet disclosed.

The launch came with a bigger reorganization. ByteDance folded its TRAE coding tools and Coze agent platform into Doubao, keeping TRAE's IDE and CLI as coding products while routing Coze and TRAE Work capabilities into workplace use cases — consolidating scattered teams under one brand.

Why every lab shipped one at once

Doubao Work is late, not early. Tencent's WorkBuddy has been live since March. In early August, Alibaba merged QoderWork, Wukong, and MuleRun into Qwen Office. Overseas, Anthropic shipped Claude Cowork earlier this year, and OpenAI launched ChatGPT Work in July.

The reason for the rush is money. China's tech giants are pivoting to office AI after a costly consumer push: around the 2026 Spring Festival, they burned enormous sums on consumer chatbot campaigns, but retention and conversion fell short once the promotions ended. Consumer AI has a monetization problem; office work has repetitive, time-consuming tasks and enterprises that already pay for software.

There's also a technical shift underneath. Chatbots that "write a few sentences for you" are commoditized. Agents that can actually complete part of a job — research, then a finished PPT, 30 minutes later — are where the value (and the willingness to pay) now sits.

Every one of these can research a topic, read your files, operate a browser, and deliver documents, spreadsheets, decks, reports, and websites. On a demo stage they are hard to tell apart.

Where the real differences hide

A work agent is only as useful as three things:

  1. How much of your work information it can reach. The model can't know what meeting you held last week, which draft your boss revised, or why a decision got rejected — unless it can read the system that stored that context.
  2. How many real work links it can plug into. Connectors, permission systems, knowledge bases.
  3. How close its output is to "ready to use." A messy Excel file you have to reformat isn't a finished deliverable.

Seen through that lens, each vendor's edge is really about the ecosystem it sits on:

  • Tencent (WorkBuddy) connects WeChat, WeCom, Tencent Meeting, and Tencent Docs. Teams already inside that ecosystem don't re-upload files or re-explain context.
  • Alibaba (Qwen Office) consolidates desktop operation, cloud agents, and automated workflows into one entry point, feeding into DingTalk and enterprise services.
  • Kingsoft (WPS Lingxi) owns documents natively — formatting, formulas, and collaboration stay in familiar software after the task finishes.
  • ByteDance (Doubao Work) leans on Feishu for work memory plus Doubao's large consumer base.
  • OpenAI (ChatGPT Work) and Anthropic (Claude Cowork) lead on raw model and agent capability, with connectors into mainstream SaaS.

The lesson for buyers: the underlying model matters less than it seems. Model A leads today, Model B in a few months. What you can't migrate cheaply is hundreds of thousands of documents, years of meeting records, and a whole permission system. That's the moat.

Why they're all standalone clients

One quiet pattern: most of these ship as separate apps rather than a button inside the chatbot. WorkBuddy, Qwen Office, and Doubao Work all have their own clients (Doubao Work also keeps a "Work" mode inside the Doubao app). OpenAI and Anthropic split "Chat" and "Work" modes inside their desktop clients instead.

The reason is user habit. Years of chatbots trained everyone to type quick questions into an input box. But a work task might run for half an hour or several hours — finding files, opening pages, calling software, managing progress across a workspace. A casual question and a multi-hour job need different UIs, and users can't be expected to know which mode a request belongs in. Separating them makes the capability boundary obvious and leaves room for a richer workspace design.

Do work agents actually deliver?

Demos are clean; real offices are chaotic. A verification code pops up mid-task, an Excel format breaks, two files share almost the same name, a permission level is off by one rank, and "make it like the previous vibe" means digging through a dozen old drafts. If an agent makes a few mistakes in a long task, the 10 minutes it saved get spent checking and reworking.

That's the honest state of the category: the standard feature list — desktop operation, long-running cloud tasks, skill libraries, connectors, multi-agent collaboration — is now table stakes. Reliability under mess is the unsolved part, and no vendor has published benchmarks that settle it.

How to choose

For enterprises, start with your existing environment, not the model:

  • Heavy on Tencent tools → WorkBuddy fits most smoothly.
  • Deep in DingTalk → Qwen Office integrates easiest.
  • Already on Feishu → Doubao Work has natural context advantages.
  • Living in WPS documents → WPS Lingxi is the least disruptive.
  • Standardized on Google Workspace / Microsoft 365 with US vendors → ChatGPT Work or Claude Cowork.

One caveat worth weighing for every option above: they run your agents on someone else's cloud and ask for standing access to your inbox, docs, and CRM. That's a lot of trust to place in a product still finding its footing.

Run a work agent you actually own

Every product in this comparison is a hosted client with your logins living on a vendor's servers.
