Grok Bot is xAI's new entry, launched in beta on August 11. Claude Cowork is Anthropic's desktop-anchored agent that shipped earlier in 2026. Both drop the chatbot framing and pitch themselves as coworkers — AI you delegate to, not AI you prompt step by step.
The real question isn't which model is smarter. It's which one actually does the work without you babysitting every step. Here's how they compare, and a third option neither of them offers.
The short answer
Choose Grok Bot if you want a cloud agent that gets its own virtual computer and operates your apps through their real interfaces — no integration required — while you act as a supervisor.
Choose Claude Cowork if you want a desktop-first agent with first-class access to your local files, folders, and browser, plus stronger, more explicit governance controls.

What is Grok Bot?
Grok Bot is xAI's agent product, marketed as "AI teammates." SpaceXAI unveiled it as an agent product, built around the idea that users hand work to a bot the way they would to a colleague — via chat, without configuring workflows or automations first.
The defining technical move sits under the chat interface. Each Bot gets a dedicated computer in the cloud, giving it a way to operate software directly. Instead of relying on an API or connector for every service, Grok Bot can navigate websites, enter data, and work through a task much like a human operator would.
That matters because most workplace tools were never built for autonomous software to control them. An agent that can drive existing interfaces doesn't need every vendor to ship a new integration first.
Grok Bot also leans on three ideas:
- Persistent memory. It can retain information from previous conversations and corrections when returning to unfinished work.

Grok Bot's origin story
Grok Bot isn't a standalone launch. It's the first joint product from the merger of SpaceX/xAI and the AI coding startup Cursor, following xAI's roughly $60B acquisition of Cursor's developer Anysphere. Reports suggest the Cursor brand will be phased out over time, folding its team and tech into SpaceXAI's agent products.
What is Claude Cowork?
Claude Cowork is Anthropic's agentic workspace, built around Claude Desktop and connected tools. Its defining trait is that it works directly on your computer: it can read, write, rename, reorganize, and transform local files and folders without endless uploading and downloading.

- browser automation via Claude in Chrome

Both agents can operate real software. The differences are in where they run, how you control them, and what you can see.

This is the sharpest split. Grok Bot's agent lives on a cloud computer — it signs into your tools and works there, which keeps the heavy lifting off your machine and lets tasks run while your laptop is closed.
Claude Cowork runs on your desktop, so it can touch your real filesystem directly: cleaning a downloads folder, turning receipt photos into an expense sheet, exporting a dashboard. Different strengths, depending on whether your work lives in the cloud or on your disk.
Model transparency
One notable gap for Grok Bot at launch: the model layer is abstracted away. SpaceXAI's announcement doesn't identify which underlying models the router uses, nor a way for users to select, pin, or switch models — so the model layer remains largely abstracted from users in the launch material.
That's a real tradeoff for enterprises: automatic routing removes a configuration decision for ordinary employees, but advanced users may want explicit control over cost, latency, reliability, and behavior — especially for repeatable production workflows. Governance and control
Anthropic has made control part of the product: scoped access to folders and tools, approvals for significant actions, team permissions, spend controls, and observability via OpenTelemetry. For teams with compliance or data-localization needs, that visibility is often decisive.

Grok Bot launched in beta with limited access. The beta is available on desktop and iOS for SuperGrok Heavy, Cursor Ultra, and Cursor Teams Premium subscribers, with enterprise users pointed to a waitlist. Reporting puts an effective price point around $120/month for the persistent-agent tier, though beta terms will shift.

Choose Grok Bot if:

- you want tasks to keep running while your machine is off

Choose Claude Cowork if:
- your work is spread across local files, folders, and browser tabs

The honest read: the rule of thumb that holds up is to pick each tool for what it's built for — Grok Bot for cloud app operation without integrations, Cowork for filesystem-heavy ops with tight control. Neither is strictly "smarter." They finish different jobs.
