What you need

  • Eigent desktop app
  • Claude for Legal, employment-legal plugin (github.com/anthropics/claude-for-legal)

Best for

  • HR teams building a first employee handbook, or rewriting one that has drifted
  • Adding a single new policy — remote work, AI usage, leave, PIP process — to an existing handbook
  • Multi-state employers who need one base policy plus a supplement per jurisdiction

Starter Prompt

/employment-legal:policy-drafting — Draft a remote work policy for our employee handbook. We are a 300-person SaaS company with employees in California, New York, and Texas. Cover eligibility criteria, equipment and expense reimbursement, availability expectations, data security requirements, and the approval process. Apply the required state supplements for California and New York automatically.

Run in Eigent

How it works

  1. Describe the policy or section you need. Eigent applies the jurisdictions already in your practice profile, so you do not restate them each time.
  2. For anything state-sensitive — leave, expense reimbursement, pay transparency, restrictive covenants — Eigent produces a base policy plus a supplement per state rather than one blended version.
  3. For a full handbook, work section by section and mark the ones you want counsel to sign off on before publishing. Do not review it as a single document.
  4. Use the handbook-updates skill to diff any change against the current version before it goes out, so you can see exactly what employees will notice.
  5. Publish, then feed the finished policy back into your hiring and termination templates so the documents agree with each other.

More prompts to try

  • /employment-legal:policy-drafting — Build a complete employee handbook for a 200-person B2B SaaS company. Primary states: California and New York. Cover at-will employment, code of conduct, leave, anti-harassment, performance management, and termination. Flag every section that needs legal review before publishing.
  • Using the handbook-updates skill: we updated our PTO policy [paste new version]. Diff it against the current handbook [paste current]. What changed, and does it trigger any state supplement updates for California, Colorado, or Illinois?
  • Draft an AI usage policy covering approved tools, prohibited uses, customer data handling, and employee obligations. Keep it under two pages and write it for engineers, not lawyers.
  • Rewrite our PIP framework so managers can actually follow it: the trigger, the documentation required at each stage, the minimum duration, and what happens at the end.

How to use

Add every state you employ in before you start drafting — supplements are generated from the practice profile, so a missing jurisdiction produces a policy that looks complete and is not. Ask for plain English and keep the legal citations in a separate section; a handbook nobody reads protects nobody. For full handbook builds, resist the urge to review the whole draft at once — go section by section and mark the ones that need counsel sign-off as you go. Always diff before publishing, because small wording changes in leave and wage policies can shift what you are obligated to do. Escalate to employment counsel when you are publishing a handbook for the first time, changing arbitration agreements, or operating in California, where the compliance risk is highest.

Expected output

A draft policy in plain English with legal citations where they are required, a separate supplement section for each jurisdiction in your practice profile, a list of sections flagged for legal review before publishing, and — for updates — a change summary naming every triggered state supplement.

Limitations

  • Policy drafts reflect the law as of generation. Validate with employment counsel before publishing, especially leave and wage/hour policies.
  • State supplements only cover the jurisdictions in your practice profile. Add new states there first, not in the drafting prompt.
  • A handbook is a legal document once employees rely on it. First-time publication and any change to arbitration or at-will language should have counsel sign-off.
