How to Set Up an Employment Law Practice Profile with Eigent

Run the cold-start interview once to load your jurisdictions, escalation rules, and state supplements — every hire, leave, and termination review after that reads from the same profile.

What you need

  • Eigent desktop app
  • Claude for Legal, employment-legal plugin (github.com/anthropics/claude-for-legal)

Best for

  • HR and people ops teams running employment law workflows in Eigent for the first time
  • Companies adding new states or countries as headcount expands
  • Teams where several people handle hires, leaves, and terminations and need the same rules applied

Starter Prompt

/employment-legal:cold-start-interview — Set up our practice profile. Primary jurisdictions: California and New York. Secondary: Texas, Washington, Illinois. Escalation rules: all terminations need VP of HR approval before proceeding; any worker classification decision needs outside counsel review. We are a 300-person B2B SaaS company with a mix of employees and contractors.

Run in Eigent

How it works

  1. Run /employment-legal:cold-start-interview and answer each question — primary and secondary jurisdictions, escalation rules, headcount, and whether you engage contractors as well as employees.
  2. Name the approvers, not just the steps: "terminations need VP of HR approval before proceeding" is actionable; "terminations need review" is not.
  3. Read the profile Eigent echoes back and confirm the jurisdiction list is complete before you run anything else — every workflow downstream inherits it.
  4. For each country outside the US, follow with /employment-legal:expansion-kickoff to load that local employment framework separately.
  5. Re-run the interview whenever you add a state, cross a headcount threshold, or change who signs off.

More prompts to try

  • We just expanded to Colorado, Massachusetts, and Florida. Update our practice profile with these jurisdictions and flag any new state supplement requirements for our existing handbook policies.
  • /employment-legal:expansion-kickoff — We're hiring our first employee in the UK. What employment law framework applies, and what documents do we need in place before day one?
  • We crossed 50 employees last month. Which federal obligations does that trigger, and which of our current policies need updating as a result?
  • Show me what the practice profile currently covers, and flag any jurisdiction where you'd recommend local counsel validate it before we rely on it.

How to use

Do this before anything else — the hiring, policy, leave, investigation, and termination workflows all read from this profile, and running them without it means restating your jurisdictions in every prompt. Be specific about escalation: name the role that approves each decision type, so Eigent can tell you when to stop rather than just what the risk is. List secondary jurisdictions even if you only have one employee there, since state supplements attach to headcount, not to importance. Treat the confirmed profile as a draft position, not a compliance sign-off: have employment counsel validate the jurisdiction list and escalation rules once, then re-validate after any major legislative change in your key states.

Expected output

A confirmed practice profile listing the jurisdictions covered, the state supplements flagged for each, your escalation rules and named approvers, and a list of any jurisdictions where local counsel review is recommended before you rely on the profile.

Limitations

  • The profile covers only the jurisdictions you state — always name the governing jurisdiction in each prompt if a matter falls outside it.
  • Employment law changes frequently. Re-run the interview after six months, or sooner if a key state passes new legislation.
  • This is decision support, not legal advice. Have employment counsel confirm your jurisdiction list and escalation rules are complete before the profile drives real decisions.
