What changed in Augment Code pricing
The old per-seat story is stale. Augment's current public Business plan costs $100 per month for up to 50 seats and includes $100 per month of pooled usage across LLM inference, the Context Engine, and compute. LLM inference is passed through at provider public list price plus a 40% service fee; top-ups or pay-as-you-go cover excess use (Augment pricing). Enterprise pricing is custom.

Augment's credit policy says credits can expire, are generally non-refundable and non-transferable, and exhausted usage may be billed in arrears under the order form or public prices (Augment credit policy). Teams should therefore replay real workloads and inspect the event-level bill.
Why teams consider an Augment Code alternative
Usage and service-fee predictability
Augment moved from messages to credits in October 2025. Its own announcement estimated completion and next-edit users around $20 per month, daily Agent users at $60–$200, and power users above $200 under the system at that time (Augment pricing-change post). Those historical figures are not the current Business plan.
A community thread argued that the 2025 change made large-context refactoring substantially more expensive, based on the author's own message-cost math (Reddit discussion). Treat it as a dated user calculation, not a current universal increase.
Source and deployment control
Augment is a proprietary product. Its security page says the company does not train on paid customers' proprietary data and advertises SOC 2 Type II plus customer-managed encryption keys on enterprise plans (Augment security). Those are meaningful vendor controls. Teams that require application source or self-hosted orchestration still need another layer.
Context ownership
Augment's Context Engine is designed for large repositories and monorepos. That specialization is the product's strongest defense. Leaving it means reproducing indexing, permission boundaries, incremental updates, symbol relationships, retrieval quality, and IDE latency—or accepting a simpler experience.

Run a large-codebase bake-off
Use a representative repository, not a toy benchmark.
Test set
- Explain a business rule that crosses five or more modules.
- Trace a request from entry point through persistence and side effects.
- Find every implementation of a deprecated interface.
- Make a multi-package refactor without touching excluded directories.
- Add tests that reproduce a subtle regression.
- Answer a question whose correct result is “insufficient evidence.”
- Update an API and all downstream consumers.
- Recover after a deliberately failed build.

Measure retrieval precision, citation-to-file accuracy, missing dependencies, out-of-scope edits, test quality, reviewer time, latency, usage cost, and recovery. Add access-control tests: a developer should not retrieve code from a repository they cannot otherwise read.
Test incremental freshness as well. Change a core interface, re-index, and measure how quickly the tool stops using stale definitions. A context engine that answers well once but drifts after daily commits is not production-ready for your team.
